On her second solo record, Liv Warfield gets a little help from Prince, who executive produces and contributes one song to this genre-crossing disc. The big-voiced Warfield has been a touring member of the most recent incarnation of the New Power Generation. She shows range and versatility here, writing all but two of the thirteen tracks while producing the set. The songs, recorded live with a muscular yet flexible band, have a refreshing vividness and dimension. While a few of them feel somewhat unrealized (“Lena Blue”) and broad, Warfield compensates with her dynamic vocals. Top songs ‘Stay – Soul Lifted’ , ‘Come Back’ , and ‘Your Show’.

Adult contemporary giant David Foster played a major role in the making of Unconditional Love, one most likely greater than the productions, arrangements, and keyboards for which he is credited here. (Who else would have thought to dig up his and Boz Scaggs‘ largely forgotten if successful collaboration from the Urban Cowboy soundtrack?) This is a pleasingly straightforward set, dominated by covers, that plays to Studdard’s strength as a mature, romantic balladeer. Some of the song selections — “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” for instance — are a tad obvious and plain, but there are several subtle surprises. Paul and Linda McCartney’s “My Love” could have been done faithfully, but it sounds like a glistening and snappy dead ringer for something off an early-’80s Luther Vandross album. On Marvin Gaye’s “If This World Were Mine,” Studdard and Grammy winner Lalah Hathaway are more like Vandross and Cheryl Lynn than Gaye and Tammi Terrell, and the two sound just as natural with one another. There’s another nod to the Hathaway family with a cover of “Love, Love, Love,” the J.R. Bailey/Ken Williams composition popularized by Lalah’s father Donny. This version has more of a lilt to it, and at no point does Studdard sound like he’s bearing the weight of living up to a genius.

Eric Bellinger will see his first official full-length album, The Rebirth, land in March.
While he has written hit singles for artists like Usher, Chris Brown, Jennifer Hudson, Justin Bieber and many more, the Grammy winning singer/songwriter has now scored his own charting single with the Kriss Kross sampled “I Don’t Want Her,” which debuted at No. 37 on the Rhythmic chart today.
Bellinger’s 2-disc LP features 16 all new original songs, with guest appearances from Sevyn Streeter, Problem, Kid Ink and more; while the second disc is a collection of Eric’s favorite songs from his ‘Born II Sing‘ mixtape series, and some recent leaks. Dionne Farris has a great voice and writing skills that are envious. “Hidden Charm”, Ms. Farris’ great EP release, showcases all her talents. Nice love songs with good lyrics (unlike some of the new R & B artists that seem to try to cram in so many useless words in each line of a song it makes me immediately turn the song off) and a very mellow delivery. Thanks for the music, Ms. Farris– share your gifts more often!
